Tax Help Available for Southeast Michigan Seniors

Older Adults Should Plan to Get Help Early This Tax Season

Many seniors turn to their senior center or other community resources for help with their taxes. This year, Covid-19 has made getting help a little more complicated, with many centers turning to document scan-and-drop options instead of in-person appointments.

Kelly Elswick, an Area Agency on Aging 1-B Resource Specialist, recommends reaching out for help now. Kelly manages our Resource Database and has been busy contacting local organizations to understand what kind of tax help will be available to seniors and what that help might look like this year. Her advice: Reach out now. “If you know of a senior in need of assistance, I would encourage them to sign up for an appointment ASAP,” she said.  “I am finding there are fewer organizations offering assistance this year, and many of those organizations have a reduced capacity to help when compared to past years. There are just fewer available appointments.”
