Offering Safe and Welcoming Assistance to LGBT Seniors

AgeWays is proud to partner with MIGen, a local nonprofit that works together to address training, education, advocacy and services needs for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) older adults. MIGen began as the grassroots LGBT Older Adult Coalition, and AgeWays is proud to have been a part of these efforts since the inception.

The three Southeast Michigan Area Agencies on Aging (AgeWays, the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and The Senior Alliance) have successfully established a precedent-setting system to help senior service agencies more effectively serve LGBT older adults. The project provided custom-tailored training to staff at the three agencies, helping them use affirming language and ask questions in culturally appropriate ways when speaking with LGBT clients. The project also provided technical support to data teams and led in-service trainings for all staff at each agency.

If you have been reluctant to call, or if you know of an older adult who is lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender, and needs assistance, reach out to our agency at (800) 852-7795.  Our resource center staff have been trained on how to sensitively identify and appropriately serve LGBT callers.
