Help family members caring for loved ones get the support they need

Our Caregiver Coaching program provides one-on-one, personal support for people who are caring for an aging or chronically ill family member or friend. Our volunteers help caregivers find resources, work through problems, and get the support they need. Our coaches can play many different roles—they can be guides, researchers, cheerleaders, sounding boards and listeners.

It is work that matters. Family caregivers are a lifeline for the seniors that they care for. Caregiving can be joyful and rewarding, put it can sometimes be frustrating and exhausting too, and there isn’t enough support for family caregivers. They often struggle alone, not knowing where to turn or whom to turn to for guidance and support.

We’re looking for people from varied backgrounds willing to spend a few hours a week connecting with family caregivers in their community. You don’t need to have any particular skill or background beyond a willingness to listen and help. If you have experience caring for a loved one, that’s a bonus, but it’s not required.

It’s work that’s rewarding. You’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you’re not only impacting the caregivers you work with directly but also the older adults and people with disabilities that they care for.

How it Works

Step 1 - Applying

It starts with filling out a Caregiver Coaching Volunteer Application. It takes about 20 minutes and will give us an idea about your background, availability and preferences. If you’re not quite ready to apply and would just like to learn more, fill out our Interest Form, and we’ll give you a call.

Step 2 - Training and Support

We spend time getting to know our new volunteers and helping them understand the needs of caregivers, the resources available, and how the coaching process works. All of our new coaches receive training before they are ever matched with a caregiver. We will continue to support you with monthly coach meetings and learning. You’ll be able to connect with our program coordinator whenever you have a question or need help.

Step 3 - Matching with Caregivers

When matching you with a caregiver, we keep your preferences and personality in mind. You and the caregiver you’re matched with will work together to figure out a rhythm—how often you’ll communicate, what type of communication works for you, and what kind of support they need. Every caregiver situation is unique. There is no set schedule or curriculum. You can meet as often or as little as the caregiver needs. You might be helping them find resources, helping them sort through options, or just listening.

    FAQ

Do I need caregiver experience to volunteer?

No. While some of our volunteers have experience caregiving, others are just looking for rewarding ways to give back. We will train you in everything you need to know!

    What is the time commitment?

Once you have gone through the application and initial training process, the commitment varies by how many matches you have. On average, coach’s check-in with their caregivers about once per month. You can expect about 2-5 hours per month per caregiver match. Don’t worry, you can select how many matches you want at any given time. In addition, we ask that volunteers are available once a month for a virtual check-in meeting with other volunteers.

How does communicating between volunteers and caregivers work?

We use a double-blind communication system that keeps both the volunteer and caregivers information private. Volunteers are trained on how to use the system during their initial training meeting. All you need is a phone.

    How does the program work?

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the confidential volunteer application. The application will ask you to share information about you, any experience you might have caregiving, and other information that will help us connect you with caregivers in the future. After the application is complete, our program coordinator will reach out to you and send you a background check authorization form and confidentiality agreement. Once this step is complete, you will be scheduled for volunteer training. Initial training is a one-day training. Virtual and in-person trainings are available. You will begin receiving caregiver matches after training is complete.

What do volunteer caregiver coaches do?

As a volunteer caregiver coach, you will support a local caregiver on their caregiving journey. This could include monthly conversations or check-ins, helping draft questions to ask doctors, sorting through lists of appropriate resources, mapping out a support system for the caregiver, and more. Volunteers will receive initial training before matching and have ongoing monthly training opportunities with AAA 1-B.

How do I get matched with a caregiver?

During the application process you will fill out your match preferences. For example, if you feel strongly that you want to be matched with caregivers of the same gender or religious background, we will do our best to match you with someone with those same demographics. Please note this an example only. We do our best to match you based on your preferences, the caregiving situation, and our current volunteer pool.

What if I don’t click with my caregiver?

No worries! Just let the program coordinator know. Because this program is based on relationships, we want you and the caregiver to feel as comfortable as possible. And, hey, we get it sometimes we just don’t click with a person. When more caregivers enroll, you will continue to be matched with other folks as a volunteer.
