Government programs to save on Medicare costs

Did you know that we have Medicare and Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) staff and volunteers available to help answer your Part D enrollment questions and explain when you should sign up for Medicare? Not only that, but this team may also be able to help you save money too.

Save on your monthly bill

First, there’s the Medicare Savings Program.  If you are eligible, this program may help reduce or eliminate monthly premiums for Medicare Part B plans. You may qualify if you are elderly or disabled with low income and limited assets.

Here’s what you could receive:

  • Help paying your monthly Medicare premium
  • Help paying your annual Medicare Part B deductible
  • Up to 20% of the approved out-of-pocket costs after reaching your Part B deductible

You can find out if you are eligible for these programs at benefitscheckup.org. You’ll be able to calculate your assets (i.e., savings and checking accounts, bonds, cash, etc.) but the home you live in, your vehicle, a purchased burial space, and personal belongings are not counted in eligibility formula.

Save on prescription costs

Second, the Extra Help Program is available to people with limited income and resources by reducing monthly premiums and annual deductibles for Medicare Part D prescription plans.  This program might make your prescriptions more affordable by lowering co-pays.  You automatically qualify for Extra Help if you have full Medicaid coverage, get help from the state to pay for your Medicare Part B premiums or receive Supplemental Security Income.

This program could help:

  • Reduce your monthly premiums (some basic plans will be available at NO monthly cost)
  • Shrink yearly deductibles
  • Eliminate the coverage gap or “doughnut hole”

To find out if you qualify for this program, call MMAP at (800) 803-7174.
