AgeWays Encourages People to Check on and Assist Seniors Without Power

Many in the six-county region that the Area Agency on Aging serves are still without electricity as temperatures are expected to drop this weekend. AgeWays urges people to check on elderly loved ones or neighbors, disabled loved ones or neighbors or others who might be vulnerable.

DTE Energy has pulled together a list of warming centers in the southeast Michigan and metro Detroit area. Some are operating 24 hours, while others are open only during the day. We encourage people to call ahead if possible to ensure that the warming center is still in operation. Please note that there may be warming centers in your area that are not listed. If you do not see a warming center listed in your area, please check with your local city or township to see if they know of or are operating a local warming center.

This list also includes some important phone numbers that can be called for assistance. Please make sure that elderly or disabled loved ones know whom they can contact for assistance.

Remember that those seniors whose water is supplied by a well may also be without access to water when the power is out. Please make sure that vulnerable loved ones or neighbors who use well water also have access to a supply of bottled water.
